More about tires...

Why do tires have such elaborate tread patterns? In fact, why do they have treads at all? After all, Formula 1 cars race on slicks, which don't have any tread.

Water is the reason. Even a thin layer of water on the surface of a road forms a barrier between the road and the rubber. This means the car is effectively driving on water, which dramatically reduces the effectiveness of brakes and steering. This is often described as "aquaplaning."

The tread serves two purposes; firstly, it breaks through the layer of water to make contact with the stable road surface. This is called the "footprint" and differs according to each tire design. Secondly, it channels excess water away from the tire, so that the rubber can grip the surface properly. If there's not enough tread depth your tires will lose their grip.

Other things to look out for...

Tire Inflation
Correct tire pressure:

  • Prevents excessive wear
  • Prevents tire damage
  • Provides optimum road holding
  • Reduces the risk of an accident

Wheel Alignment
Wheels can be knocked out of alignment, by bumping the curb for example. Correct wheel alignment will:

  • Prolong tire life
  • Improve road holding
  • Increase fuel economy

Wheel Balancing
An unbalanced wheel is unsafe because it bounces, making less contact with the road. Balancing wheels regularly ensures:

  • Reduced steering vibration
  • Prolonged tire life
  • Prevention of steering joint and wheel bearing stress

In General...

  • Bald patches on your tires are an indication that your wheels may need balancing.
  • The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm but safety suggests replacing a tire when it is down to 3 mm.

Winter Driving

In winter, driving conditions are often treacherous. Tire pressure on ice or snow creates a film of moisture. It is this film that makes icy roads slippery. Winter tire treads are specially designed to ensure a firm grip on icy roads, and to bite firmly into snow.

All Season tire treads are designed to achieve the optimum performance under year-round road conditions.
