Batteries
An automotive battery is indispensable to the operation of a vehicle. Its three main functions are:
- 1. Supply power to the starter and ignition system so the engine can be cranked and started.
- 2. Supply the extra power necessary when the vehicle's electrical load requirements exceed the supply from the charging system.
- 3. Act as a voltage stabilizer in the electrical system.
Battery Ratings
Replacement batteries should equal or exceed the Original Equipment (OE) ratings. For Ford vehicles, the Cold Cranking Amperes (CCA) required are in the 550-plus range. Cold Cranking Performance (CCA) A measure of the battery's ability to deliver power when it is cold and the engine requires more power because it also is cold. Reserve Capacity The ability of a battery to sustain a minimum vehicle electrical load in the event of a charging system failure. This includes current for ignition, head lamps, windshield wipers and defroster.
Helpful Hints
- Most automotive batteries do not require water to be added for the life of the battery.
- When it is necessary to add water, distilled water is recommended. However, any water that is safe to drink is usually safe to add to a battery.
- Routine maintenance consists of a regular visual inspection of a battery and cables for signs of deterioration, a reading of the voltage output and periodic cleaning.
